What's Covered in the College Essay Academy?
Dr. Kay uses her own checklist of ten questions to evaluate how a college admissions essay should be written. If your essay has these characteristics, you’ve written a great college essay and can be reasonably sure that your essay is one that admissions reps will be sure to notice.
How It Works
You will be work with Dr. Kay to review over 30 model essays. You will learn how a college rep reads an college essay and what they look for to determine it's strengths and weakness. You can then work with what you have learned from the review to write your own essay in response to the prompt.
The course also analyzes essays that negatively affect your admission rather than enhance your application. Prompts include:
- Who are you? Where do you come from?
- Discuss your academic passion.
- Discuss an extracurricular passion.
- Discuss a time you challenged a belief.
- Discuss a time or incident when you moved from childhood to adulthood.
- How will you contribute to diversity at our school?
- Discuss a time you experienced failure.
- Describe someone who has influenced you.
- Why do you want to attend this school?
In addition, the course offers examples of essays that are risky because of topic, tone, attitude, or failing to respond to the prompt.
Many of the essays, all written by Dr. Kay’s high school seniors, are poignant. And while you might find that others are humorous, they all convey a growing understanding on the part of the writer and convey some of the strengths the writer will bring to a college.
Using what you learn from this mastery class, you will learn how to stick out and portray yourself in your essay as one who will make contributions to the college and take advantage of the myriad of opportunities.
